More details have been revealed in the recent arrest of former UFC champion BJ Penn in his native state of Hawaii.

Penn was taken into custody after a fight with a 37-year-old male outside of a bar, according to a report by the Hawaii News Now. “The Prodigy” was taken into custody at the Maui Four Seasons after returning there from the scene of the incident.

The report states that Penn attacked his friend after he tried to keep the former fighter from getting involved in an altercation. The friend says he was “suddenly punched” in the face and kneed in the forehead by Penn, suffering a fractured left eye socket.

Penn has since been released from county jail. He retired from MMA in July following a loss to Frankie Edgar, leaving his record at 16-10-2.

In 2007, Penn pleaded no-contest to assaulting a police officer who was trying to break up a fight outside of another night club. He was sentenced to probation for that altercation.
