Former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez solidified his stance in the lightweight division with a victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC Fight Night 81.
However, with current titleholder Rafael dos Anjos set to defend in March vs. Conor McGregor, would Alvarez take a No. 1 contender bout if presented to him?
“I’m willing to wait with the title fight in March,” he said, during an interview on the FS1 post-fight show. “I don’t think I have much more to prove than fighting the best guy in the division.
Following a loss to Donald Cerrone in his long-awaited UFC debut, Alvarez has rebounded with victories over Pettis and Gilbert Melendez. Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has been sidelined with injuries, is another top contender, but Alvarez feels he has done more than enough to warrant the shot.
“I’ve fought guys like Rafael dos Anjos in the past. I know how to adapt,” he said. “I’ve beat Pettis after being with Mark Henry for only three months. I still have a lot to learn with him, but I know I can out-will and out-battle Rafael dos Anjos.”
